It is a New Year, a gift of a clean slate, a chance for a fresh beginning to an entirely new decade. How exciting, and slightly overwhelming, right? If you are like me, your mind is wandering with questions, goals, and dreams for what the future holds. But at the same time, and if there is anything that I know for sure (and have learned from the self-care era of the 2010's) is that being mindfully present in the moment is the most important mindset shift we can do for ourselves. But how? Here, I have compiled my top 5 simple go-to rituals and practices to energetically cleanse the mind, body, or space so that we get calm, centered, focused, and uplifted anytime throughout 2020 and beyond.
Are you feeling the negativity of a space or around your personal self? Sage, Palo Santo, and incense have been used for centuries and by cultures around the world to cleanse the energy of a space and clear any negativity around our physical bodies. How does it work? According to an interview by Vogue, with energy practitioner Colleen McCann, "Scientists have observed that sage can clear up to 94 percent of airborne bacteria in a space and disinfect the air. When sage is burned, it releases negative ions, which is linked to putting people into a positive mood".
Personally, I like to use sage to clear my home or workspace and palo santo to clear my physical self or another's. Sage has a stronger more pungent smell, while palo santo is more mellow and subtle.
HOW TO CLEANSE ENERGY OF A SPACE OR SELF 1. Set a clear intention for the ritual. If you are getting rid of negative energy, say it out loud and say it to yourself 2. Open all of the windows 3. Light the sage wand, palo santo or incense on one end for at least 20 seconds to get the flame going, then go through each room, every corner, that you are clearing. For a body clearing, allow the smoke (not the flame) to touch each part of you, including the bottoms of your feet 3. Extinguish it safely. 4. Fill the space with love and gratitude.
CRYSTAL CLEANSE IT.
Are you going through a rough time and need some grounding? Stones and Crystals have frequencies and properties that are known to facilitate and support healing. Hematite, an iron oxide mineral, is grounding in nature and connects us to our bodies and purpose. If possible, when you are feeling sluggish, down, or going through something difficult, place tumbled or raw Hematite in your palms and anywhere on your body you are holding tension for up to 15 minutes. This exercise should leave you feeling energized and relieved.
Hematite can be found at most crystal stores anywhere, and if in Los Angeles, book a strengthening reiki session with me where a hematite healing session is available.
BREATHE IT IN.
Need some quick calming or energizing? Aromatherapy is simple and so effective. More and more research is being done on why exactly aromatherapy works, but what we do know is that when we inhale certain plesent scents, our olfactory nerve is stimulated, which then triggers the parts of our brains and limbic systems that are responsible for emotions to release positive chemicals (such as serotonin_ producing a calming and stress-relieving effect. What we experience? We get to enjoy something that smells beautifully and resets whatever thoughts are running through our minds. A few popular essential oils to keep close by: Lavender calming, soothing, promotes sleep. Citrus/orange upifting, energizing, refreshing. Clary Sage anti-depressant and relieves anxiousness.
EXHALE IT OUT.
Do you need to let go of something frustrating, overwhelming, or stressful? There is nothing quite like sitting in peace for this purpsoe, even if it is just for 5 minutes. When you feel yourself in stress, your body is telling you that it is time for a pattern interrupt and that you need to hit a reset button asap. To do this, find a quiet place, this could be your room, your car, a corner of a park, anywhere close and convenient will do. Close your eyes and just focus on your breathing. If you find your thoughts racing, turn them to counting your inhales and exhales. Inhale for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds, and repeat.
There are so many incredible vibrant and healthy juices to drink and of course, if possible, try them all and find your favorites. But, it is not necessary to be at the top of the juice trend to benefit from the cleansing properties of simple hydration. I love this ritual, because it is quick and so effective (and almost always available). When you are in the need for a refreshing new outlook, or to de-stress, grab a glass of water and mindfully drink it. Don't chug it down, just find a relaxing place to be, and slowly drink your water. Be grateful for each sip and notice as it fills your body with rejuvenation. Repeat often, as Leonardo Da Vinci once said, "water is the driving force of all nature".
